As part of this expansion, Red Gum BBQ is relocating its manufacturing facility to the new Seaford location. Alongside their mouthwatering dishes, customers will be able to purchase Red Gum’s award-winning sauces, irresistible meat rubs, and a soon-to-launch range of smallgoods. Red Gum BBQ At Home aims to be the ultimate destination for BBQ lovers, offering everything from a quick takeaway to all the essentials needed for a sumptuous Southern feast right at home.
This October, Red Gum BBQ is also celebrating a remarkable milestone – ten years of bringing authentic Southern-style barbecue to Australian palates. Co-owners Melissa and Martin Goffin have poured their hearts and souls into their passion for BBQ, with Martin’s love for Southern food ignited during travels across Georgia, Tennessee, South and North Carolina, and Virginia. In 2013, Martin left his local government job to establish Red Gum BBQ, which later found its home in Red Hill in 2016. Not long after, Melissa left her teaching job to join the business, marking the couple’s full commitment to their culinary dreams.
In 2018, Red Gum BBQ achieved a notable distinction by becoming Australia’s first B Corp restaurant, a recognition that they hold with great pride. Ethical values continue to steer their business decisions, making them a beloved and trusted name in the culinary world, known for their unwavering commitment to creating the best and most authentic Southern-style BBQ.
Melissa Goffin, the co-owner and Managing Director of Red Gum BBQ, is a strong advocate for ethical business practices and women’s empowerment. She is a founding member of Women in Business Mornington Peninsula and passionately believes in the power of women to change the world. Her dedication extends to advocating for more inclusive social and political conditions to support women’s success. Melissa is also a founder and organizer of the Women’s March on Melbourne, emphasizing her commitment to progressive and equitable values.
Martin Goffin, on the other hand, has carved his place as the resident Pitmaster of Red Gum BBQ. His inspiration came from traversing the United States and uncovering precious family recipes that have become the heartbeat of Red Gum BBQ. When he returned from his American adventures, he spent weekends filling their St Kilda backyard with the irresistible aroma of barbecue smoke. During his paternity leave, Martin set out on a mission to secure an industrial space, and he found the ideal location in what was once Elgar Pittock’s garage, adjacent to the Red Hill Scout Hall. Today, it houses three large Texas-style offset smoker barbecues crafted from recycled LPG gas tanks. A decade later, Red Gum BBQ stands as an essential destination for fans of low and slow-cooked, authentic Southern BBQ on the Mornington Peninsula.
The Red Gum BBQ team eagerly awaits the arrival of customers at the new Seaford location. They are all set to provide delectable, handcrafted small-batch sauces and meat rubs, giving everyone the chance to bring the flavours of the American South into their homes. It’s an exciting development for barbecue lovers, as the Red Gum BBQ experience expands its reach and continues to serve up the best in authentic Southern-style barbecue.
