Everything You Need to Know About Kryal Castle

So you’re here to learn more about Kryal Castle? Well, you’re in for quite the ride. You know the scene in The Cable Guy where Steven and The Cable Guy are at Medieval Times? Well, now you’re on the right path. Kryal Castle is a replica medieval castle which opened in the 1970s and was built Mount Warranheip, just east of Ballarat on the Western Freeway. At Kryal Castle you’ll find live jousting shows, a moat, a drawbridge, a maze, fire eaters, jesters, and the ‘Wax of Torture’ museum.

There are four-star accommodation suites on site, so if you’re really getting into the medieval mood, you can always stay a night or two. Kryal Castle is home to the Victorian Medieval Festival which happens in early December, the Medieval Feast, Murder Mystery Night, as well as other themed events throughout the year.

Where Is Kryal Castle?

You’ll find Kryal Castle about a 1 hour 20-minute drive from Melbourne along the Western Highway toward Ballarat. The castle is in the local of Leigh Creek, which is also home to the Leigh Creek Roadhouse, the Golden Nugget Bakery, and borders Mount Warrenheip.

Kryal Castle can be accessed from Forbes Road, which runs between Old Melbourne Road in Dunnstown, to the Western Freeway in Leigh Creek.

How Far Is Kryal Castle From Melbourne?

Kryal Castle is just a 1 hour and 20-minute drive along the Western Freeway. It’s a 15-minute drive east from Ballarat’s CBD.

If you’re looking at heading to Kryal Castle from Geelong, it’ll take you just over an hour driving north along the Midland Highway.

A trip to Kryal Castle isn’t going to break the bank, with general admission tickets available. Yearly memberships can also be purchased for Kryal Castle. Kids under 2 are free.

Things to Do at Kryal Castle

There’s plenty to do every day at the castle, with regular events being held throughout the year. Here are some of the great things to do at Kryal Castle.

Check out the Main Arena

Head to the Main Arena where you can join Knight School where you and your family can learn to become a knight. Take part in the fine art of Axe Throwing and hit the wooden targets, or check out the Mounted Skill-At-Arms Display where Kryal Castle’s knights will showcase their skill with the lance.

The Royal Joust

Watch two knights battle in the Royal Joust on horseback. Home to the only continuous jousting event in Australia (what a claim), you can catch the brave Sir Phillip on his noble steed, Valiant, take on any newcomers. The Royal Joust takes place at 2pm daily.

Torture Dungeon & Museum

Not for the faint-hearted, the Torture Dungeon & Museum showcases some of the horrible, albeit interesting, ways that people were tortured in the middle ages.

The Maze

Legend has it that there are lost souls still wandering around The Maze. If you dare, enter the maze that has been a favourite of visitors since the castle first opened in the 70s.

Jester’s Theatre

Grab a pew in the 100-seat theatre and catch the court jester as he entertains the masses. The jester shows change regularly, so there’s always something new to catch on every visit.
