River Drive Motel, a new five-room self-contained motel in Tarwin Lower, Victoria, has been restored with a modern design and a nod to Australian nostalgia. The owners, partners Kate Hannaford and Dic Coates, bought the then-run-down motel in 2021 with the goal of providing guests with a home away from home.
Working with their team at Moth Design, Kate and Dic infused the interiors with the surrounding landscape, featuring eucalyptus greens, earth tones, and wattle golds. Each room is unique, with thoughtful touches throughout and a mini bar stocked with local products.

“We wanted to reinvent the concept of what holiday accommodation can be by providing a home away from home that is both modern and nostalgic. With kids of our own, we love the idea of being able to simply drive up, unpack and enjoy your own adventure,” said Kate.
The motel offers five fully self-contained rooms, each with individual access keypads and equipped with kitchenettes, complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, a wireless Bluetooth speaker, and onsite parking for one vehicle. Guests can also enjoy a large communal garden area with picnic tables and a BBQ, as well as a ‘garden shed’ filled with classic games.
River Drive Motel has partnered with local caterer Acacia Edibles to offer all-day seasonal grazing boxes for those looking for something more substantial. You’ll also find local products from Gurneys Cider, Loch Distillery & Brewery, A.R.C Wines, and Wa Wa Chocolate on hand to try. The motel is conveniently located near the Tarwin River, local shops and cafes, and a short drive from the Venus Bay beaches.
Bookings can be made online at riverdrivemotel.com.au, with rooms starting at $340 per night and a minimum two-night stay. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a family adventure, River Drive Motel is the perfect place to create memories that last a lifetime.
