If you’ve ever been to Sydney, you’ve no doubt either heard of, or been to Totti’s. Launching inside Bondi’s The Royal in 2019, and with an outpost on George Street in the CBD, Totti’s has become a bit of a Sydney institution. Merivale, the empire headed by Justin Hemmes, and the new owner of the Lorne Hotel, has taken its time to venture south into Victoria until it landed on the popular seaside pub in 2021. Now, Merivale will bring Totti’s to Victoria, albeit a couple of hours from Melbourne, as it takes over the ground floor of the Lorne Hotel this summer.
Merivale’s much-loved restaurant Totti’s will welcome locals and visitors for the first time on Saturday, 11 March when its doors swing open within the Lorne Hotel.
The opening will mark the fifth outpost of Totti’s, created by Merivale Executive Chef Mike Eggert, after four successful openings in Sydney. Executive Chef and Surf Coast local, Matt Germanchis, is at the helm of the Lorne restaurant, adding his local passion and knowledge to Totti’s menu classics.
Designed for guests to roll in straight off the beach, the Totti’s Lorne menu captures the best local seafood and produce from King George Whiting to Apollo Bay octopus, complemented by local wines.
The menu will also include Totti’s signature antipasti and woodfired bread, handmade pasta including pappardelle lamb ragu, ziti prawn alla vodka, and fettuccine tomato sugo and stracciatella.
Merivale Executive Chef, Mike Eggert, says: “We’re stoked that Totti’s is finally opening in Lorne for Victorians to enjoy. We’ve crafted a menu that combines Matt’s expertise in local seafood with classic Totti’s dishes allowing you to pick and choose depending on your mood—whether that’s a bite to eat after a day at the beach alongside a glass of local wine or a selection of dishes for a long afternoon with friends and family. We can’t wait to welcome you.”
Other notable menu items include small plates of smoked albacore tuna, snapper crudo and marinated octopus, alongside larger plates of whole crumbed King George Whiting and a wood-grilled lamb ‘Barnsley chop’.
The specialty dessert menu will include Totti’s tiramisu, banana splits, chocolate torte, and a classic affogato. Executive Chef Matt Germanchis will also be bringing his famous gelato recipe to the Lorne Hotel.
Germanchis says: “I’ve loved seeing all the local support since announcing the opening of Totti’s Lorne and we’re excited to welcome locals and visitors to experience the very best seafood and produce that our beautiful region has to offer.”
The restaurant has been designed by Kelvin Ho from Akin Creative who worked closely with Justin Hemmes, Bettina Hemmes and Amanda Talbot on the vision and concept.
“The Lorne Hotel is an incredible building with a deep connection to the community and history of Lorne. We were inspired by the warmth and eclecticism of the local architecture and have looked to create a place that is a nod to the 70s but with a distinctive Totti’s outlook. Chequered cork floors, sorbet terrazzo and terracotta, soft arches and aged copper fireplaces …think Totti’s on holiday,” says Ho.
Bookings open at 9am, Wednesday 8 March on the Lorne Hotel website.
Totti’s Lorne will open from 12pm on Saturday 11 March 2023.
