The National Photographic Portrait Prize Comes to the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum This June

The Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is thrilled to announce that the highly anticipated National Photographic Portrait Prize 2022, organized by the National Portrait Gallery, will be on display from Friday, June 9 to Sunday, September 3, 2023. This exhibition marks the only Victorian showing of the prestigious event, offering locals and visitors a unique opportunity to witness the rich tapestry of Australia’s photographic talent.

As the 15th edition of the annual exhibition, the NPPP 2022 features an exceptional collection of entries submitted by both amateur and professional photographers from all corners of the country. With more than 2,400 submissions received, a panel of experts carefully selected 50 finalists whose works will be showcased at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum.

Sandra Bruce, Director of Collection and Exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, expressed her excitement about the exhibition, highlighting how the NPPP captures the diverse range of emotions and experiences that define Australia. She remarked, “Australia is a country with myriad faces, and as we continue to live in disruptive times, the National Photographic Portrait Prize offers a sweeping view across the nation’s experience, one that reminds us that our lives continue on regardless of wider circumstances.”

Jim Child, Mayor of Yarra Ranges Council, shared his enthusiasm for hosting the travelling exhibition, stating, “We’re thrilled to be the exclusive Victorian venue for this exciting showcase. We eagerly await the arrival of visitors to the museum, where they can engage with the stunning photographs and participate in the array of public programs and workshops.”

Mayor Child further emphasized the unifying power of exhibitions like the National Photographic Portrait Prize, bringing people and communities together through shared experiences. He expressed confidence that audiences from diverse backgrounds would find inspiration and appreciation for the talented artists and their captivating narratives on display.

The winners of the NPPP 2022 were announced in Canberra prior to the exhibition tour. Wayne Quilliam’s striking portrait titled “Silent Strength, 2021,” which features Aurukun man Eric Yunkaporta adorned in ceremonial headwear, claimed the prestigious 2022 National Photographic Portrait Prize. Quilliam was awarded $50,000 in prizes, including $30,000 in cash from the National Portrait Gallery and $20,000 worth of Canon equipment courtesy of Imaging Partner Canon Australia.

Additionally, Adam Ferguson received the Highly Commended prize and was presented with a Colour Edge CG2730 Monitor sponsored by EIZO. The Art Handlers’ award went to Adam Haddrick, who received $2,000 in cash from IAS Fine Art Logistics. The People’s Choice Award, supported by the David Roche Foundation, was bestowed upon Luther Cora, who received a $5,000 cash prize.

The exhibition is made possible through the support of the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government initiative aimed at enhancing access to the nation’s collections for all Australians.
