A historic hotel in Hobart, the Brunswick Hotel, has gone up in flames in the early hours of Monday morning. Night managers who lived on-site at the hotel woke to smoke and helped guests escape as flames took over. Brunswick Hotel manager, Darren Brown told ABC News he was “absolutely devastated” as the venue was starting to get back on its feet following the business impact the pandemic has had.
“We’ve put everything into that property to try and rebuild post-COVID and just started to get some response … to be woken a bit before 2:00am to find that it was on fire.”
The Brunswick Hotel was originally opened in 1827 using convict labour and operated as an illegal grog shop.
All businesses surrounding the Brunswick Hotel will remain closed for the time being until services can be repeaired.
