The highly anticipated Ballarat International Foto Biennale (BIFB) 2023 is set to captivate photography enthusiasts and art lovers alike as the Art Gallery of Ballarat unveils two remarkable exhibitions in its core program.
Titled “Effacement,” the collaborative exhibition by Karenne Ann and Heather Horrocks takes visitors on a journey through post-pandemic identity exploration. Living and working on Wadawurrung Country in Ballarat, the duo’s joint project, called ISOyoh, explores the transformative power of masks. The images by Karenne Anne distort the identity of Heather Horrocks, who wears the masks, while redundant VHS tapes are ingeniously manipulated with crochet hooks to tell new stories. Themes of the war on a virus, climate change, and women are woven into the exhibition, with the tapes forming part of a recreated sitting room of the Norman Lindsay family, disrupting the gallery’s tranquil ambience.

Another compelling exhibition, “Neverlasting,” is presented by Ballarat-based photographer Ian Kemp. This collection delves into the symbolic relationship between the natural world and the transient nature of human life. Kemp’s use of traditional printing processes imbues the images with an otherworldly quality, drawing attention to the ephemeral beauty of the ever-changing world. The exhibition highlights the profound beauty of line, form, and composition, symbolizing the transitions and changes that occur in human life with the passing seasons. Ian Kemp, recognized for his fine art photography, previously made his mark as a finalist in Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographers competition and the Ballarat International Foto Biennale Open Program Awards.
Louise Tegart, the Gallery Director of Art Gallery of Ballarat, expressed her pride in being a major venue partner for BIFB 2023. Tegart emphasized that BIFB is a celebration of photography that brings exciting exhibitions, both local and global, to Ballarat’s audience and visitors. The gallery’s core program exhibitions featuring local talents offer insights into contemporary Australian culture and complement the major international artists featured in BIFB’s lineup.
