Bendigo’s Beloved Ghosty’s Diner Reopens with a Retro Twist

Ghosty’s Diner, a beloved local establishment in Bendigo, has recently unveiled its exciting transformation, welcoming customers with a brand new concept and design. Formerly a toasty bar, the diner underwent an extensive renovation earlier this year to emerge as a retro-inspired Americana hotspot, complete with a late 80s-style decor and menu.
According to owner Nick Styles, the decision to revamp the diner came after realising the need to return to its core values. “After spending a good part of the life of the business adapting to COVID-19, we realized that it had become very transactional. We wanted to get back to that and started to develop the concept of a diner,” Styles explained.

Assisting in the revitalisation process was Lach Philp from Weekdays Design, whose attention to detail is evident throughout the entire custom space. The diner now boasts a vibrant colour scheme with orange and brown hues, paired with retro-inspired furnishings and artwork, creating a warm and inviting ambience that captivates visitors.
Adding to the nostalgic atmosphere, Ghosty’s Diner features artwork by renowned Magnum photographers from the 80s, including Martin Parr, Alec Soth, and Thomas Hoepker. The owner’s photography work also takes centre stage, alongside a notable dot print framed piece by Tony Irving of the Oakleigh Motel.
While the decor impresses, the menu steals the show with its focus on casual dining and familiarity. Drawing inspiration from Americana, the diner offers a range of unique dishes, including the popular F.G.T. Sandwich featuring crispy panko crumbed green tomatoes as the main hero. This new addition has quickly won over fans with its unique flavours. As a bar as well, Ghosty’s Diner presents a variety of cocktails, including punch bowls for a shared boozy booth session, alongside a selection of minimal intervention wines and Love Shack Brewery beers on tap.
Looking ahead, Ghosty’s Diner has exciting plans to expand its offerings. The diner intends to build a mini Vegas-style chapel in its spacious outdoor car park area. This addition will allow shotgun and casual weddings and other events to be held later in the year. The owner envisions providing locals with a casual option for their special occasions.
