The Winners Of Airbnb’s Country Pub Project Have Been Announced

Back in June, Airbnb announced that they would be embarking on a search to find six country pubs around Australia that were in need of a little TLC.
Once the winners were found, each pub would be allocated a $50,000 grant, a team of design professionals, and an Airbnb host to help them out with their listing. An initiative that could possibly save these dilapidated watering holes.
“Pubs are important places of reconnection for locals and travellers alike. They offer more than just a meal and a bed. As is the case in many rural towns, these pubs are a central meeting place, corner store, town hall and much more,” said Airbnb spokesperson Brent Thomas.
Well, now the winners have been found. And it’s a beautiful crop of old country pubs.
Imperial Hotel | Ravenswood, Queensland
“Ravenswood was a ghost town when Diane and John took over the Imperial Hotel some 20 years ago. They may be the town’s good luck charm though, as gold was discovered just a few months later. The pub—and the town—have been kicking ever since.”
The Royal Standard Hotel | Toora, Victoria
“When the Toora Magpies hit a rough patch the past few seasons, publicans Amy and Steve painted the Royal Standard in the team’s colours to show their support. They know how much everyone loves their pub, so they give as much love back to the community in return.”
Bischoff Hotel | Waratah, Tasmania
“A few years ago, Paul and Liz went on a family holiday to Waratah. It was here that they came across the Bischoff Hotel, and fell in love at first sight. So much so, they decided to buy it.”
The Woolshed Hotel | Nungarin, Western Australia
“Laurie and Carolyn moved to western Australia’s wheat belt to take over The Woolshed, and have been battling illness ever since. But the pair say that, without a doubt, the small town’s big heart is what keeps them going.”
Royal Hotel | Sofala, New South Wales
“Steeped in history and oozing charm, the Royal Hotel in Sofala is a pub like no other. The same can be said for publicans Sandy and Marty, who’ve been pulling beers here for over 50 years.”
The Grand Hotel | Millicent, South Australia
“With up to ten ghosts believed to trawl its historic halls, the Grand Hotel in Millicent might just be one of the country’s most haunted pubs. But if spooky stories aren’t you thing, publican Andrew and manager Leandra are always happy to have a chat, with locals and not-so-locals alike.”
So, what’s next?
These pubs will undergo a transformation with the help of the grant and their appointed design team. Once done, you’ll be able to stay at these old beauties and explore the beautiful surrounding areas.
