The highly anticipated Victorian cherry season is just around the corner, set to kick off in early November and run through to mid-January. This year, the season promises to be one of the best in recent memory, with orchards already in full bloom and some tree varieties flowering up to two weeks earlier than usual.
Victoria’s cherry orchards, located in the fertile Goulburn Valley, Yarra Valley, and Sunraysia regions, grow some of Australia’s most popular cherry varieties. Among the favourites are Merchant, Bing, Regina, Lapin, Sweet Georgia, Sweetheart, and Van, offering cherry enthusiasts a range of rich, sweet flavours. With more than 80 varieties ripening throughout the season, new cherries will be ready to pick almost every week.
The festive season is a peak time for cherry production, with Victorian cherries in abundance just in time for Christmas. Known for their versatility, cherries are a must-have for summer entertaining, whether enjoyed on their own, in salads, sauces, and jams, or as part of classic desserts like tarts, pavlovas, and cakes.
Alison Jones, President of the Victorian Cherry Association, is excited about the upcoming season. “We can’t wait for everyone to once again experience the incredibly rich, naturally sweet taste that comes from Victorian cherries,” she said. “Cherries are a summer staple and the ultimate seasonal fruit. This year is shaping up to be a great season, so we encourage everyone to visit their local greengrocer or supermarket and stock up on cherries to support our farmers.”
For those looking to connect directly with the source, the Victorian Cherry Trail will open early this season, offering visitors the chance to meet the growers, pick their own cherries, or buy fresh fruit straight from the farm gate.
With the season lasting just 100 days, there’s no better time to indulge in the flavours of Victorian cherries while supporting local growers.
