Sorrento is going through another boom post pandemic. Recently, the long dormant Continental Hotel reopened, and now, 9 months after the doors closed on the legendary Stringers Cafe and grocer, the iconic corner site has once again opened, this time simply as Stringers.
The former general store building was constructed in 1896, taking advantage of the local limestone available as many of Sorrento’s older buildings display. Stringers is brought to you by the Darling Group, the team behind Melbourne cafes such as Higher Ground, Kettle Black, Top Paddock, Dundas & Faussett, Darling Cafe, and Bambu. “Stringers is engrained in the history of the area, and we’re so excited to continue its presence and relevance within the community, and offer Sorrento main street as well as the Peninsula, a totally fresh space,” said Director of Darling Group, Nick Seoud.
Stringers is open all day, from 7am until late so it covers every meal of the day and inevitable drinks later on. Inside you’ll find dining areas serving up Italian-inspired dishes, alongside a delicatessen, and grocer. The pizzeria features a custom Verona imported pizza oven, a gelateria that will keep hot holidayers cool on the Peninsula, and the underground wine cellar is filled with rare and fine wines.
Expect to see dishes such as BBQ split chilli prawns, lobster roll with chilli mayo and iceberg lettuce, as well as Stringers’ special take on the potato cake (or scallop if you’re from further north).
The Darling Group has respected the past of the Stringers site with the renovation, and has worked closely with designer Chris Connell to bring it all together.
“Through a rigorous design process, Stringers has been conceptualised into a timeless space that embodies its coastal context whilst meeting the functional requirements of a high-end commercial interior. We made intentional material selections, preserving its heritage and retaining the existing limestone building, with the layering of materials crucial in instilling a sense of warmth, vibrancy, and tactility,” said Connell.
