The Simple Pleasure Of Portioned Butter
Tiny, pre-portioned butter. There’s a beautiful simplicity of sitting down to breakfast at a roadside motel, roadhouse, or cafe and being served toast with two packets of foil-wrapped individual butter portions.
7 grams appears to be the optimum amount of butter to spread across a single piece of toasted sourdough bread. I can’t even imagine the research that went into deciding that was the perfect amount. Not 6 grams, not 10 grams, 7. 7 grams of lightly salted joy. I have reached out to Tatura to find the answer, but am yet to hear back.
These tiny butter portions you’re used to are made by Tatura or Western Star. Tatura is a dairy manufacturing company that’s owned by Bega Cheese, and is funnily enough found in the town of Tatura, Victoria. The company was founded in 1907 where they were producing 100 tonnes of butter. Fast forward to 2022 and Tatura produces 80,000 tonnes of dairy products with milk supplied from the surrounding area. Fonterra owned Western Star has been churning the good stuff since 1926 when 16 western district butter factories came together to market under the brand of Western Star.
I took to Twitter to find see if people loved tiny butter as much as I do.

When I was younger I just assumed Tatura had monopolised the global little butter portion market and that if you stayed at a B&B in the Loire Valley or a beach resort in Bali, you'd be offered 7 grams of Tatura butter.

Really handy for when you order takeaway toast, you can use the wrapper to smoosh the refrigerated butter into the toast.

Is it weird that I kinda look forward to them when I’m out for breakfast or in hospital?
