Growing up in South Gippsland, I knew Fish Creek for two things. The town had a football team in the Alberton Football League, and the pub in town had a giant fish perched atop its roof. Fast forward to 2024, Fish Creek is gearing up for its 7th biennial Tea Cosy Festival, kicking off on Saturday, May 18th and running until May 26th. This unique festival promises a celebration of creativity, community spirit, and of course, all things tea.
A Tea Cosy Extravaganza
The heart of the festival is the Tea Cosy Competition, which has seen more than 200 entries pour in from across Australia and even overseas. Expect to see a whimsical display of tea cosies celebrating everything from the Royal Family to Bluey’s Heeler family and even local favorites like Gardening Australia’s Costa. You’ll also catch The Muppets, Frida Kahlo, Matt Preston, Collingwood’s Darcy Moore and Dame Edna—just some of the celebrities that have been honoured with a tea cosy.
This year’s competition goes beyond traditional knitted cosies. Get ready to be amazed by creations made from ceramics, recycled materials like clock parts, and even aluminum can ring pulls.
A Festival for All
Fish Creek isn’t just about the competition. Throughout the festival, cafes and galleries will be showcasing local artists. Visitors can also participate in workshops ranging from rope making from recycled materials to painting and Zentangle art.
Foodies won’t be disappointed either. From Devonshire Teas and High Teas to a “Mad Hatter’s Tea Party,” there’s a delicious treat waiting for everyone.
The festival offers something for everyone. Enjoy live music, street performances, a short film festival, and even a visit to the Bendigo Bank Village Market.
Supporting the Community
Organised by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Fish Creek Tea Cosy Festival aims to raise funds for local projects, including the rebuilding of the Fish Creek Football Netball Clubrooms.
