Bendigo’s Tramways have been operating in the gold boom city since 1890. Expansion of the tramway follows $10.7M investment from the Victorian government which will deliver the project in conjunction with the City of Greater Bendigo, and Bendigo Heritage Attractions.
“The expansion of Bendigo Tramways will enable our historic trams to be restored and preserved for the future—and the release of this tender means works on the project are another step closer to getting underway,” said Minister for Transport Infrastructure and Member for Bendigo East, Jacinta Allan
The expansion will also enable Bendigo Tramways to increase the number of trams they restore, creating more jobs and generating economic activity in Central Victoria.
“As a project partner the City of Greater Bendigo will lead the delivery of the Bendigo Tramways expansion, bringing local expertise to the project that will benefit Bendigo and the surrounding area for years to come.” said City of Greater Bendigo Mayor, Andrea Metcalf
The release of the tender follows a period of community consultation and design work for the project, with a high-level concept design for the expansion presented to the community last year.
This feedback led to the design being further refined, with locals given another chance to provide their comments and input, particularly on the new storage facilities and how construction impacts can be minimised.
The feedback received was then taken into account when putting together the detailed development plan and informed the planning approvals process.
